For vehicle travel to choose a size, measure the height of your dogs head and add 2-3 inches, then measure the length not including the tail and add 3-4 inches and you should have a good fit. There should only be enough room in the crate for the dog to enter the crate turn around and lie down so it is touching two sides and the rear of the crate so that it is supported in the event of sudden stops while in a vehicle. Too much room in a car crate is not a good idea.

For stationary crates more length is fine.
